I could be the President of "Label Readers Anonymous". Seriously. Nutrients and chemicals, natural or otherwise, fascinate me.

Food products, supplements, shampoo, cleaning products, horse feed... You name it, I read the label. Supplements and natural skincare products are usually what puts me over the edge. In my world, there is nothing "natural" about lab created vitamins, chemicals or synthetics.

After the labeling nightmares at Ava Anderson and their closing this week, its really got me thinking more about all the false advertising and incorrect labeling. A few of the Ava Anderson products were glaringly obvious to anyone familiar with natural skincare products and soaps. It is impossible to have a bunch of oils create "soap" without a saponification or a detergent. Yet it was magically possible if you looked at their labels and asked around... This is not the first time I have found such labels in products marketed as "all natural", etc.

While surfing the interwebs, I came across an infographic and personal testimonial in an MTHFR facebook group that piqued my curiosity.. I am not familiar with Nerium or any of their products and had never checked out the ingredient lists on any products. I thought, great, company advertising the Methyl form of B12 (methylcobalamin). My thought was, if they were smart enough to use a quality form of that particular vitamin it may be worth checking into.

The graphic that lured me down this rabbit hole for the last few days.

Like any "Googler" approaching almost professional status, First thing to pop up on Google Images when searching for "Nerium EHT ingredients" was THIS ( first picture below).... and Instantly, my radar had a little *ping*.

Well that just doesn't make sense, CYANO-cobalamin is NOT the Methyl form(methylcobalamin).. Off to investigate and see when they changed their formulas.. Straight to the company.

At this point of googling more and finding nothing to specify when the formulation had changed (or did it?!?!), I was begining to feel delirious..

"Nerium Delirum", the irony of that gave me a bigger chuckle that it likely should have.. After all we were talking about a supplement for "Brain health and function".. This was turning into the antithesis of that..

After spending way more time on this than I should have, I decided that to get to the bottom of this without much work or going in more circles, I'd ask if anyone out there in Facebook land could take a picture of the back of the bottle. It would solve my wondering.. Fast, quick, easy. I see loads of people selling Nerium products, how hard could it possibly be???? Snap a pic with your cellphone, hit post, and done.. Easy peasey.

This actually turned out to be a pretty hard task, all I wanted was one pic.. I posted on my own FB wall, got *crickets*.. I joined and posted in numerous Nerium groups asking for a pic of a bottle of the EHT's label. A few people tagged other people, and referred me back to the website (which was of no help, no mention of product reformulation anywhere.)

Two days passed, still nothing. In some of the larger groups with thousands of people, makes me wonder if either nobody has a bottle of this, or nobody had a working smartphone.. Id have imagined that like most of the MLM's a potential new customer would have been flocked to in hopes to make a sale.. I was just sure that this would get me an answer..

2 days later, still *crickets*.. so I called Nerium's Customer Service..

I got a helpful customer service rep... I explained my situation in seeing the differing labels and expressed my concern for the differences in labels/formulations there was in with the website and materials right from Nerium..

She put me on hold for 5 minutes or so, and checked. Her exact words were "Its Cyanocobalamin in the product".

To which instantly lit my fuse.. I made it extremely clear to her that their website and some materials said otherwise.. BUYER BEWARE!

This is potentially a large FDA and FTC labeling issue. (I have reported appropriately.. Someone else with a larger reach than I do needs to check into this.)

And again, this was today's ingredient list on the website......

showing "Methylcobalamin"... While todays Nerium Customer Service rep says its "Cyanocobalamin", when asked when did that change, "I don't know" was the response.

Don't believe me, call and ask.. 855-463-7486.

Whats really in the Nerium EHT? Will we ever know for sure?

This should absolutely be concerning to ALL Nerium Brand Partners and potential customers. If ANY company cannot keep an accurate hold on whats really in the products and keep the website current, why on earth would you want to risk taking something that the formula may have changed unbeknownst to you? Truth in labeling is a huge for anyone with allergies, sensitivities and issues with certain products where they MUST know exactly what is in that product..

Id still love to see a picture of the back of a Nerium EHT bottle.. If anyone can get me one, let me know!

Lots of Facebook users post TBT (Throwback Thursday) pics. Old pics that are either funny, embarrassing or reminiscent of times past. It's mostly a hoot seeing what friends and family post for #TBT.. Then there's Trashed-out Tuesday, Man Candy Monday, Sunday Funday, and now what Im going to call "Wednesday <complete id="goog_1592016500">@</complete> Wit's End". Because I have been at my own Wit's end with this for over a decade..

A number of months ago, I was surfing along on Facebook when I should have been cleaning or doing something a whole lot more productive (like usual.. LOL). I came across a picture on a business/school page's wall that transported me back a more than a decade and a gamut of feelings of hurt and anger came rushing back. I screen shotted it knowing it would eventually turn into the catalyst of this blog post coming to be.

What I found most concerning about this horse was that this was done to the horse for 3 consecutive days.. Yes, 3 consecutive Raindrops. To which the practitioner performing the Raindrop posted the pics as a followup to another's questions about the welts and "detoxing". I was SICK. Poster stated that the welts above scabbed over. (just think about that, enough damage from the EOs to burn and injure the skin to the point of scabs.)

Unfortunately, I am part of enough Horse groups and pages that use EOs that this comes up on a pretty regular basis and these kinds of pictures and such never stay up for very long. I am always the one that looks like the bad guy when I add my personal experience and the cases of horses like the previous two to the fray of things. It's marketed as a healing treatment. In some cases it is anything but healing, its HARMFUL and potentially dangerous.

I feel that this kind of misguided marketing absolutely IS negligent and at times abusive in the case of the second horse pictured due to the repetition.. The correct information is out there, and really is nothing more than good common sense. We all know that hives on ourselves or our animals are a bad thing, not something to keep on taxing the body with. Sadly, that point is forgotten when it comes to these type reactions on the horses. EOs do not defy the bodies defense mechanisms in the case of hives.

First we have to look at the welts/hives created where the EO was dropped into the skin. What are hives?

Pure and simple, Hive/Welts are NOT detox. They are what the body sees as allergenic or traumatic in a way the body must keep out. The antithesis of "detox". Any horse person who has owned horses for any length of time knows that hives can show up from a change in feed, different flyspray, allergies to a number of things and attempting to remove the source is the best way for the horse to gain relief. I can already see some eyes rolling and hearing the "this is different, its detox because the oils are so pure". NO, purity equals potency. Potency that should be prediluted to an appropriate level. For massages and bodywork, 2% is a good starting point. What is 2%? 2 drops of EO to 1 teaspoon (5ml) of carrier oil. This is across the board, regardless of brand. Although it may vary slightly dependent on which EOs are being used. This is where the fatal flaw is in how the raindrop is taught and its disregard for safety.

EOs have a wonderful place in the world of alternative therapies for humans and horses alike. They are extremely concentrated, often with pounds of plant matter behind each milliliter of oil. They pack a real punch and need to be treated with respect. Those promoting this kind of ignorance are promoting abuse and negligence when we look at the cold hard facts. Repeating a treatment that is causing hives is not helping the body detox, its taxing the body and in many cases creating more issues, pain and sometimes open sores and scabs resulting from the chemical burns.

Now for the real WHY this sends my blood pressure soaring and why do I feel its negligence and abuse?? I fell victim to this over a decade ago. And suffered similar and much worse reactions on 2 of the 4 horses total I performed the Raindrop Therapy on.

I was "certified" in performing this therapy, and *I was the source of injury to two horses!*. The information I was taught was extremely poor in terms of general EO safety and it showed up right off the bat when applied as instructed to the horses.

One of those two horses having an adverse reaction (mind you its called a "detox" by the company) had lost all the hair on the welts a couple days later. It took several weeks to heal the hairless sores/scabs created from this. And with Muphy's law the way it is, this horse was not someones backyard pet horse, it was a rope horse valued at more than many peoples vehicles! The owner was NOT impressed with having to borrow horses to compete on for three rodeos she had pre-entered prior to the Raindrop on her horse. I was horrified and mortified. I had created this on a horse. *I* was the reason this happened to that horse because of what and how it was being taught.

To be more accurate, I was horrified that someone who was "certified"(myself) and trained to perform a therapy to help animals, should NOT be out there causing physical harm to their client's animals, much less leaving them with welts/chemical burns/hives and a few long lasting scars. Losing hair off the welts created by what is supposed to be a healing and therapeutic technique is NOT something I'd call safe use of EOs. Yet this is pushed by all sorts of people claiming there is no side effects or bad things that can result from it.

I thought I was doing right by diluting much more than I was taught to, knowing that the oils were hot and could cause discomfort and irritation based on my personal experience. Even that, wasn't enough in the case of those two horses. I had a raindrop done on myself in the class. I never imagined the welts and hairless sores Billy ended up with from an even more diluted raindrop than I was taught were seemingly possible. I was told the oils were safe and that it was a "detox", that only good came from it. That the EOs posed no risk because they were plant based, all benefits and no side effects. I am still horrified with some of the results I see of this same thing happening, time and time again. Each time being "explained away" with the detoxing lie. I was young. I was naive and I was made to believe some very dangerous things out of my own ignorance.

As quickly as I started this EO endeavor with the Raindrop Technique, I stopped in my tracks and left all that I had been taught behind. I, in no way shape or form wanted to be associated with that kind of ignorance, negligence, abuse or the feeling of burning the hair off someone elses horse EVER again.. Who would? I knew then I needed to look for a deeper more true unbias education source(s) on the essential oils because of the wonderful results I had had using them in most cases. I know that my love for EOs is going to get lost in this extremely long blogpost, because of the nature of what im talking about, but believe me when I say, I truly have an Essential Oil Addiction. Just ask my husband, or anyone who visits my house. This isnt against EOs, its against the Raindrop as it is.

The secondary reason for quitting this therapy, if I had welts on myself like the horses I had experience first hand with, I would not be a happy camper. The horses most certainly were NOT comfortable nor did they enjoy the this. If I could take that back, I would in a heart beat. I've had to a much lesser degree some of those same hot burns back when my exuberance for Essential oils overrode my own willful ignorance gained from the companies poor information. Well over a decade later, I'm still unlearning..

I see this same scenario play out time and time again, with lots of people recommending Raindrops for humans and horses alike. But more often I see practitioners blindly following what they are told. We are smart enough to know that detoxing not the case. With the reactions such as this to Raindrops, it is not "different". It is still the same thing, just a different root cause or trigger.
So, without going into more rantings about how the raindrop as its taught is unsafe, I'm going to let you all do some futher exploring on your own to form your own informed opinions based more on the science and research of the essential oils, rather than just the sales end of it. Essential oils work, and they work extremely well. They are a wonderful addition to massage and rehab therapies, extremely therapeutic when used appropriately. I LOVE EOs. Yet they most certainly have the power to harm and can be fatal in some circumstances if/when used incorrectly. They need to be used with respect. Safe use is all I care about. I hate to see animals suffering due to an owner's ignorance in what they have been told, and even more so, hate to see any "practitioner" be ill-educated in their attempt to help an animal. Welting up horses like this in the name of "detox" should NOT be happening. PERIOD! There is so much more to aromatherapy than being a rep and pedaling EOs and its a lot more complicated than many of the shotgun approach books make it out to be. The science behind the EOs chosen and the method of the therapy will determine so much more than the brand the EO is coming from.

If one lesson is taken home from reading this entire rambling rant of mine, this is it... I'll sum it up into one paragraph and make the font and bold, and wish I could put it on a billboard in neon lights!

In the real world of true Aromatherapy, there is no "shotgun/magicbullet approach" to having a number of EOs thrown at the client in a one-size-fits-all approach such as the Raindrop. A true holistic health practitioner assesses the human or horse client as a unique individual, catering the treatments to the overall needs of the client. A past history will be taken, as is a number of pointed questions to get a baseline to build the treatment foundation upon. Not all EOs are suitable for each constitutional type, and some are contraindicated depending on other factors. Don't trust your horse in the hands of people who are taught extremely poor information. Consult a professional that has an unbranded education in the Clinical use of EOs and Aromatherapy, not an ignorant brand rep.
Calendula salve is something that should be in everyone's medicine cabinet. I've used it a few times in years past, but have become a faithful user in the last couple years on some skin issues stemming from post thrombotic syndrome in one of my legs.. It's very therapeutic, and can be used for a wide variety of things with great success.

What is Calendula? "Calendula" is Calendula Officinalis. Also know as the Marigold or Pot Marigold. Before you turn up your nose and think "EWWWWWWWWWWWWW! No way!", this may not be the same plant you think of when you hear "Marigold". I know its not for me.
Calendula Officinalis is the specie of Marigold that we need. I have only bought the commercial products, but after more searching and talking to some friends, I decided to take the plunge and make my own after learning more about which plant specie and variety was the one needed to try making my own salve.

Calendula is known for its benefits on the skin, and has been used as an anti-microbial(both antibacterial & anti-viral), anti-fungal, used for burns and irradiated skin, bruises, soreness, cracked dry skin, eczema, cooling to inflammation, diaper rash, and skin ulcers. It can help reduce bleeding and is great for varicose veins. I use it mainly for the veinous ulcers that come and go on one of my legs after having compromised cirrculation after several DVT's. Calendula salve has worked better than any of the topical ointments and treatments I have used from the doctor. I also have started using it on diaper rash on my little ones with great success!

You could easily order from anywhere online or pickup some at any herbal or whole foods store. Just make sure that you get Certified Organic, then you wont have to worry about what kind of pesticides were used on the flowers and ending up in your salve. Same goes for your Coconut oil. Organic is the way to go. You can use other good quality Organic oils to make your salve, it does not need to be Coconut, but the unrefined coconut works wonderful and adds alittle extra to the smell.

Add your carrier oil of choice. In this case, I used Nutiva Organic Coconut, which is a solid below 76*. Warming up the oil to become a liquid, then using a funnel to pour the oil into the jars containing the flowers.

Then into the Crockpot. I filled the water to about half way up the sides of the jars, and turned the crockpot on low. 3 Days of warming the oil and flowers to speed up the process.

After the Calendula has infused for 3 days(give or take), you can strain it with a fine metal mesh strainer, a cheesecloth or thin dish rag. I prefer the cheesecloth or rag because you can squeeze out the flowers and get the very last of the infused oil out of them.

Store in a cool dark place.

How to make a basic salve-
A salve or ointment, is a combination of an oil or fat that has been infused with herbs or flowers and bees wax. The oil works as a solvent to draw out the therapeutic properties of the herb and creates a healing and soothing base to build other products with besides just the salve I'm making today. By adding the bees wax(or another emulsion wax you have on hand) it helps to solidify the wonderful healing infused oil and make it apply and have around without creating a big old sticky mess. The bees wax also adds some natural moisturizers, a protective element that helps with inflammation, irritation and dryness. Its also been found to have an antioxidant quality which is a great addition to everything.

The basic salves I make are generally 4 parts carrier or infused oil to 1 part bees wax or other emulsion agent. 1 cup carrier to 1/4 cup wax... or 1/2 cup carrier to 1/8th cup wax.

Add the bee's wax to the infused oil in a double boiler. Slowly warming and stirring the oil & wax until wax melts. After the wax is melted and mixed well with the oil pour into containers and let cool, stirring occasionally until its starts to solidify. Store in a cool dry place.

I'm constantly amazed by the amount of people using essential oils neat on their own skin. This is especially common in the world of the multi-level-marketing (MLM) essential oils. Focus is placed on selling volume, and not nearly enough on the safety aspect of EOs. Useage of EOs neat is when their used undiluted on the skin.

Just today I saw a picture of a young boy, who had used a blend made to be used for ADD or ADHD along the spine undiluted in a roller bottle. The young boy had the hyperpigment(darkened skin) along his spine where the blend was used.

An example of photo-sensitization with essential oil:

The bottle was from a very large company, which also has no warning or dilution instructions. Lime is KNOWN to be phototoxic even in minute amounts, but there were no warnings nor mention on the companies website and pages about the oil. Not only is this unsafe its negligent in the simplest form.

http://www.naha.org/explore-aromatherapy/safety/ gives a great rundown on photo-sensitization

An essential oil that exhibits this quality will cause burning or skin pigmentation changes, such as tanning, on exposure to sun or similar light (ultraviolet rays). Reactions can range from a mild color change through to deep weeping burns. Do not use or recommend the use of photosensitizing essential oils prior to going into a sun tanning booth or the sun. Recommend that the client stay out of the sun or sun tanning booth for at least twenty-four hours after treatment if photosensitizing essential oils were applied to the skin. Certain drugs, such as tetracycline, increase the photosensitivity of the skin, thus increasing the harmful effects of photosensitizing essential oils under the necessary conditions. Table 3 lists some common essential oils considered to be photosensitizers.

Some oils depending on their method of distillation or expression, may fall onto either side of phototoxic, so be sure you know what your using.

All of this talk about the phototoxic oils really got me thinking about the overall safety aspect of dilution.

The normal "standard" dilution rate for an adult is 2 - 2.5%. 2.5% is 15 drops per 30ml(1 ounce) of carrier oil. 2% is 12 drops per 30ml(1 ounce).. For children, pregnant women, the elderly, immune compromised or pets, 1% is sufficent.

To get a better visual of just how powerful EOs are, and how much carrier is needed to safely dilute I created this graphic for another site. www.learningabouteos.com and the facebook group Learning about Essential Oils.
The numbers within the oil drops are the total amount of drops of essential oil. The bottles represent the amount of carrier.
I dilute the commercial blends I use to 2% if they're undiluted, unless its a pretty severe acute issue needing an focused treatement then it may be up to 10%.

So now that your mind is all jumbled up with numbers, I'll make it easy.. Lets go back to that 10-15ml roller ball bottle used neat, how much blended diluted oil does that make? A LOT!
Contact should not be confused with short and tight.. You can easily have contact with out resistance.

Pain is a big one, if the horse is in pain or something is out of balance from compensating for something, your going to hit a roadblock there too. It could be something as simple as sliding your saddle back to where it naturally wants to sit (NOT perched on the withers), finding a different bit or saddle thats not creating discomfort, having the horses hooves assessed by a reputable farrier familiar with the effects of hoof balance on the rest of the body, or maybe a massage therapist of chiropractor to address the musculo-skeletal issues.

Attention to detail is likely the biggest one that all to commonly falls to the wayside. A riders weight and body wareness can play a BIG part into how the horses react and use their bodies to carry out the riders requests. The rider may be the one collapsing a hip, dropping their own shoulder, cocking their head to the side, leaning forward, or carrying their weight unevenly. All of which can greatly affect whats going on with the horse. Alot of riders don't realize their even doing it until they ride with a trained eye or have use of arena mirrors to look at themselves.

Trust & Respect. We've all ridden a horse that as a few fries short of a happy meal or had some issues that just didnt make sense to us at the time. With good training a lot of those issues can be overcame if its just a training issue and not a big mental issue on the horses part.. For your average horse thats not been screwed up too bad along the way, you generally should be able to trust that horse enough not to do something that will get you both hurt or killed for no apparent reason. Trust is a two way street. If you dont give your horse the opportunity to make a mistake and learn from it, your going to hit some roadblocks that wont just take care of themselves. Respect is fairness. Respect and trust go hand in hand. The horse has to trust that their rider won't be snatching them in the mouth, unfairly discipling for the correct response(when the rider inadvertently thought they were asking for something other than what their body was telling the horse), or passive agressiveness in letting things slide and slide and then going postal when it could have been avoided if corrected appropriately the first few times instead of letting it slide.

The opposite end of trust is fear. Fear of falling off, horse running away with you, dumping you in the dirt, or the unknown. By riding with deep seated fear, your creating it within the horse. Tight reins, clamped leg, rigid body thats leaning forward, your telling the horse it has something to be scared of, when all you want to do is feel more secure with yourself. Its a viscous circle that your actions are fueling its continuation.

Under normal circumstances, your horse can be trusted to do what he has been trained to do. It’s only our intervention that makes his behaviour abnormal Thus you must always trust your horse, unless you have good reason not to. When you first swing a leg over a new horse, you’re entitled to be cautious. The more you get to know how the horse responds, the more you can relax and let the fear of the unknown and "what if"'s fall to the wayside. The quicker you do this, the better for both!

People often complain that their horse isn’t listening to what their asking, the horse is tuning them out. This is a two-way street. The rider has often tuned out the horse, and the "asking" has become an annoyingly nagging repetition. Tune out your horse, and your horse tunes you out. Ask until you get a response, even a little one in the right direction needs to be rewarded in the begining. In time the horse figures out that if they respond to the slightest of cue, you will quit getting after them. But if you keep asking over and over with no release when the horse is responding appropriately, your opening the door for the horse to just tune you out.

Head shaking and bit evasion. It comes from training and/or tack choice. A horse needs to accept contact, but if that contact is from the hands of someone who likes to jerk the reins and snatch at the horses face or catch the horse in the mouth when they get of balance, the horse is going to turn to whatever means they can to protect their mouth. Bits and how the horse is bitted play into this as well.. a single jointed bit will create a nutcracker effect in the horses mouth, jabbing them in the roof of the mouth. Add some shanks to a single jointed bit, and you get a bit that will rake up and down the horses pallette when pressure is applied. Tom Thumbs and Argentine snaffles have no place in my tackroom. There are MUCH better bit choices. Your horse will thank you if spend the extra few $$ on a bit that doesnt have such a poor mechanics.

Bottom line, if your stuck at a roadblock, listen to your horse. Their actions and REactions are in relation to their training, discomfort or biomechanics. Often one small adjustment can make a whole world of difference.

You may not ever have a visitor and be 50 miles from the closest neighbor, but that sweet old neighbor lady next door is going to want to borrow a cup of sugar or an egg when you just cant stand the crusty-willys out in the pasture any longer. It's inevitable.

This morning a close friend and I were talking about sheath cleaning and having quite the giggles over it. I just had to go dig up "The Sheath Cleaning Song". Somewhere is the same version Sang, but i couldnt find it.. just sing along in your head, or if you really want to creep out your coworker in the next office or cubicle, sing it out loud. Bet you cant do that without laughing!

**If your at work, or have people looking over your shoulder, now might not be the best time to play the song, as it may be alittle graphic to the non-horseperson. Your boss may not appreciate the entertainment value in it nearly as much as you do!**
All kidding aside, sheath cleaning IS one of those things that needs to be done if you have geldings and just one more reason why I prefer mares. I have a feeling, that I'm going to be meeting all the neighbors this afternoon.
I’m Juanita, the “Opinionated Mare". I have a few addictions: Horses, Energy Work and Aromatherapy. Yes, they are addictions. I have spent all of my life owning horses, working in the horse industry and dragging home all kinds of critters to take care of, fix up, or find a new home... often to my husbands dismay.

I attended an Equine Massage School in California over 10 years ago, and that started opening up doors to a more natural way of life and the world of essential oils. Profession-wise, I guess you could say I’m mostly along the lines of an Equine Wellness Consultant- with certifications and/or extensive training in aromatherapy, numerous forms of massage therapy, podiatry, nutrition, saddle fitting, kinesiology and bio-mechanics for the horse and rider thru dressage and more balanced "holistic horsemanship" style that fits any breed and discipline. There is so much more to it, but if we stop and think, that is the foundation of where everything else builds from with a horse.
